Reinforced cement concrete (RCC) as a construction material has come into usefor the last one century. In India, RCC has been used extensively in the last 50-60 years. During this period, wehave created large number ofinfrastructural assets in terms of buildings,bridges, sports stadium etc.,which are lifeline for the civilized society. These have been created with huge investment of resources.We cannoteven dream of recreating suchassets out of limited national resources. It is,therefore,essential to maintain them in functional condition. Since, deterioration of RCC is anatural phenomena and has started exhibiting in large number of structures, asystematic approach is needed in dealing with such problems. Identification of the causesof deterioration and consequent repair/rehabilitation strategy at optimum costneeds a scientific evaluation and solution

Ithas been observed that the deterioration phenomena of RCC is not realized by majority of practising civil engineers. As aresult,the factors considered necessary for durability of RCC buildings aremany times notgivendue importance during construction and/orduring maintenance.Thedurability provisions have been given emphasis in the revised 'Code of Practice on Plain and Reinforced Con­ crete' (IS:456-2000). Inthe international scenario also,deterioration of RCC had been drawing atten­ tion of the practisingcivil engineers forquite some time. They have accordingly,made certain advance­ ments inthe field ofprotection,repairs,rehabilitation, strengthening and retrofitting ofthe existing RCC structures takingadvantage of the advancement inthematerials science,more particularly thepolymer science. Theknowledge in this area among the Civil Engineers,in India is still atinfancy stageandneeds development and systematic dissemination.Civilize Mart is apioneering attemptwith this objective in

Having faced the problem ofdeterioration in RCC buildingsunder itsmaintenance,the need of specialised unit in the field ofrepair, rehabilitation and protection ofexisting buildings was feltand a unit was created . Based on various investigative works carried outby this unit including remedial measures suggested & adopted for deteriorated buildings and study ofliterature available on the sub­ ject,this company has been prepared. our experiance coversthe subjectstarting from causes of deteriora­ tion, investigative methods,design principles, selection criteria of repair materials & methods,guidelines for selection ofconsultant, short-listing ofcontractors and preparation ofcontract documents for repair/ rehabilitation contracts including nomenclature and related specifications ofcommonly used repair items. A variety ofcase studies with photographs have alsobeen included to facilitate the readers to imbibe a better understanding of the subject.

 

Initially, the structures deteriorate slowly dueto cyclic temperature variations, overloading, physi­ cal causes & aggressive chemical attack due to enviromnent etc. Later on, if not paid due attention, these deteriorate rapidly and fail to meet the functional requirement for its designed service life. Various causes of deterioration like original construction defects,chloride induced corrosion,carbonation of concrete, sulphate attack, cracking due to thermal gradient,plastic shrinkage cracks and foundation settlement etc.
